No jewelry today. But design
Last night at Christie's New York, the François-Xavier Lalanne sale totaled $59 million USD, with 100% of the lots sold.
The first sale exclusively dedicated to François-Xavier Lalanne, from the collection of his daughter, Dorothée. The live auction, featuring 70 lots, lasted over four hours in Christie’s storied Rockefeller Center salesroom.
15 Lots sold above $1 Million; 100% Sold
15 out of 70 lots were sold for over one million dollars, accounting for approximately 21.43% of the total lots.
Two remarkable highlights during this auction: 'Le Grand Centaure' skyrocketed past 7 million dollars, while 'Très Grand Ours' soared to over 6 million dollars.
It is interesting to observe the evolution of the value through these two "Grand Ours" sculptures:
$6 million in 2024 vs $3.6 million in 2022.
The value increased by approximately 66.67%.
How many objects are in circulation?
In total, there have been three major Lalanne sales at Christie’s so far, about one per year, totaling 626 objects for François-Xavier Lalanne and 440 results for Claude Lalanne, with a combined total of $150 million from these three sales.
At Sotheby’s, there have been many more dispersed sales through "Important Design" auctions, so I have only counted the specialized Lalanne sales, totaling five auctions: $176 million with 1,130 objects for François-Xavier Lalanne and 1,042 results for Claude Lalanne.
The highest record for a Lalanne piece goes to the "Rhinocrétaire," the unique piece in 2023 at Christie’s
Stay tuned; I’ll soon share Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand's reaction to this record-breaking Lalanne sale.
Takeaways : The market for Lalanne remains as strong as ever, even though we question each time whether it will continue. Yes, it does continue!
But for how long will it last?
